The most current and widely cited definition of adventure therapy, among American practitioners, is that adventure therapy "is the prescriptive use of adventure experiences provided by mental health professionals, often conducted in natural settings, that kinesthetically engage individuals, families and groups on cognitive, affective, and behavioral levels (Gass, et al, 2020)."
Of course, feel free to schedule a phone call or send me your questions about adventure therapy here.

Most adventure therapy sessions happen in an outdoor setting. Sessions can vary significantly based on the type of intervention we choose to meet your goals. We'll come with a plan before each session, but we can hike in a natural area, shoot arrows on an archery range, kayak on a river, or use a challenge course for high and low ropes course programming or to build a primitive fire. Sometimes we sit in camp chairs or around a picnic table for the entire session.
We make time each session to reflect on how you and/or your family engaged in the activities we selected and we align what happened in session with your counseling goals. We leave ample time for reflection and conversation during and after each activity. This creates many opportunities for us to remain on track with your counseling goals and explore goals from new perspectives.
Most counseling sessions happen twice a month and last between 60 and 75 minutes. This includes time for us to get acclimated to outdoor areas and make our way back to trailheads after the session has needed.
Some Adventure Therapy and family counseling sessions which involve kayaking, archery, and challenge course initiatives normally last between 2 and 3 hours. This accounts for time to explore and understand safety with one another during these types of sessions.
The price for a typical individual counseling sessions is $155. The price for family counseling and couples counseling is $175.
Adventure therapy services using interventions such as kayaking, archery, primitive fire building, and challenge course initiatives last longer and require more preparation for a safe experience. These 2 to 3 hour sessions are $315. Bundling a number of adventure-based sessions using these types of interventions will reduce the cost per session.
A sliding scale fee is available for Adventure Therapy sessions involving archery and ropes course activities. Please call me at 210-391-2569 so we can discuss options for making these services financially accessible to you and your loved ones.
San Antonio Adventure Therapy provides private pay services. Insurance is not billed, but a receipt for services can be provided. This may help with reimbursement from insurance carriers.
My office is located at 16607 Blanco Rd. Suite #502 in San Antonio, Texas. I provide in-office sessions there, but most sessions take place in the outdoors. I've met with clients in parks, on local waterways for paddling kayaks, and at Cielo Vista Team Challenge for other activities.
